As Audiovisual Comunication students, we have to work with lots of audiovisual pieces and, in a future, we will have to create it. In this degree the word <<audio>> is added, so at least we should know how does audio work in small or big productions. Audio is one of the most important elements and has to transmit everything the author wants to. For this, there is a large amount of softwares for audio editing.
“Let that be about creating a ringtone out of your favourite film song or creating a fusion of songs for the dance in the college; an effective audio editing software is necessary. Also, when you are passionate about music creation and do want your output in the best possible & professional manner, you have to depend upon fully-fledged environment to get the best out of your efforts. Just like any other purpose, choosing one solution for audio editing would be tough-enough, given the different capabilities each tool possesses.” (Arjunan, A. 2018)
Types of software for audio editing
“There are a number of ways to categorize the different types of audio editing software. Audio editing software can be freeware or paid software.” (WiseGeek, 2018)
However, the ones that are paid have a demo available for the costumers to try them for free. These demos limite the days of work, the lenght of the audio we want to edit or the number of sessions we can work with.
“Another way audio editing software can be differentiated is by the file types it handles. Some audio editing software programs handle only one particular type of sound file, for example MP3. Others are equipped to work with a very large range of file types, including AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format), AVI (Audio Video Interleaved), MP2 and MP3 (Motion Picture Experts Group — MPEG — formats), OGG, VOX, WAV (Waveform Audio File Format, and WMA (Windows Media Audio). Some audio editing software can extract audio from a video file for the user to work with.” (WiseGeek, 2018)
There are also differences between the help and support that the software can offer. It can give support in many ways including: frequent questions and answers, glossaries, a product manual, tutorials, etc. It could also have technical support or regular updates.
Other types of software can be the system they are made for.
“Audio editing software is made for a variety of operating systems, including Windows® 2000, Windows® XP, Windows® 7, Vista®, Mac® OS X, and Linux. It may have only editing functions, or be capable of other tasks, like recording, converting, and burning. Audio editing software is often a standalone program, but audio editing features are sometimes included in software that also has video and image editing capabilities.” (WiseGeek, 2018)
Another kind of software are the ones that process the audio data in different ways.
“Audio editors may process the audio data non-destructively in real-time, or destructively as an “off-line” process, or a hybrid with some real-time effects and some off-line effects.” (Wikipedia, 2018)
There are advantages and limitations in these softwares. If you want to learn more about that, click here.
