Audio Software

Audio software are the tools we use to work with audio as digital information. This kind of programs allow us to play and edit any kind of sound mainly with computers or Digital Audio Workstations (DAW).

With the introduction of these softwares we can appreciate how everything has changed from analogue audio to digital, increasing our options and most of the times the speed to work on it.

There are a lot of kinds of softwares that we can use. Some of them are just focused in one tool or function, but nowadays our options are huge in terms of Digital Audio Workstations. Here I’ll give you some examples of Audio Softwares that are really useful depending on your needs working with audio information:

Sequencers, Recorders & Mixers:

Pro Tools, Cubase, Logic Pro… are mainly the softwares used to record, edit and mix audio. Using hardwares as USB interfaces for example, we are able to convert sound into digital information, and after that work on it depending on our interests. Most of these programs are used in the music production process, because they give us tones of tools as EQs, compressors, triggers, virtual instruments… to create and modify the sound as we want it. Also, these softwares are able to mix analogue and digital, for example in the mixing process; we could use a vintage board and also inserting plug-ins in the same channel. This last option could give us a million options to treat the audio.

These kind of programs are the most common in the audio business. As the technology has been growing up and our computers are able nowadays to process more information in less time, audio brands have been working into their devices to increase the services and the tools for the users. Some of them have different levels of their software, so amateur to professional people have options according to their level.

Multi-track systems:

New kinds of hardwares and modern tools have been the way to record and to work at the same time with a bunch of tracks. It could be kind of simple, but actually as we go back to the history of sound and the art of recording it’s obvious that the change took our possibilities to the top. As we know the multi-track recorders on a tape this concept has been changing the past years resulting in a new concept of digital multi-track recording.

Other types of audio softwares:

Since we are nowadays into the digital era more than ever, computers have been the main tool to work in the audio production. Taking a laptop or a computer as the only thing we need, our possibilities are bigger than ever. I’ll show you some examples of different softwares that anyone could do.

Introducing the MIDI into the music production was one of the greatest inventions, and nowadays there are some audio softwares as Reason that work mainly with MIDI signals.

In the electronic music there are also softwares just used to play and mix tracks as Traktor. This program gives the chance to simplify the task of mixing in live shows and also to combine the tracks with effects and filtering.

Another example of a software full of possibilities is the Ableton and the Adobe Pack. Ableton is a multi-track recorder and player that can also work at the same time with sampler triggers and mixers as the Traktor.

With the Adobe Pack, we can work with audio and video simultaneously with Premier and Soundbooth and it gives many possibilities to the users

As you can see, there are tones of options to work and to create sounds. Each software can be mainly focused in specific tools but clearly we are now living a great moment for audio work. The power of digital tools is priceless for us. We couldn’t even know how many possibilities we do have right now.

At the same time it’s a good moment to ask for the difference between all the analogue and digital work and all the tools we are missing from each other. Probably, as many professionals of audio industry say, the best way to take the best part of them is to get to work at the same time with an hybrid system of analogue and digital.

I would say that taking time to know all these softwares is something that I would really recommend to you, otherwise you will never know about your potential working with audio.
